Abstrak
In Indonesia, farmers used to collect seed from the best plants for sowing but the changed with the Green Revolution and the introduction of improved varieties, farmers have became plant-breeders. These farmers and others have been trained in plant breeding at a farmer field school (FFS), a program of the Center for Genetic Resources, Agricultural Wageningen University. The training has provided farmers the confidence in developing plants and reduce dependency on government seeds. The farmer-breeders learned to select and breed self-pollinating crops. The grain selected for seed was stored in the shops, wrapped in plastic bags, sold by the shop-owners, and purchased by farmers in the beginning of each planting season.
