Abstrak
As global support for climate action grows, Muslim religious groups are increasingly integrating Islamic theology with environmental sustainability. Research on eco-religiosity has primarily focused on its theological and ideological dimensions, leaving the mediatization aspect largely unexplored, particularly how religious, and environmental values are negotiated and communicated within digital culture. This paper explores mediatized eco-religious movements in Indonesia, focusing on EcoDeen Indonesia and Kader Hijau Muhammadiyah. These movements are significant as they represent a digital society movement among middle-upper-class urban Muslims in Indonesia, highlighting how negotiations occur among various actors, actions, and social media strategies. We combined textual analysis and in-depth interviews with social media managers of both movements to examine their discursive practices in negotiating Islam with environmentalism on social media. We found that Muslim digital society movements—as exemplified by these two—are highly mediatized, effectively leveraging social media’s affordances—such as visibility, networking, and mobilization—to advocate eco-religious narratives and reconstruct their Muslim identity. Furthermore, we examined how neoliberal digital platforms influence their overall strategy for engaging audiences and sustaining momentum. This study emphasizes the contributions of these mediatized movements to the broader scholarship on digital culture and civil society movements, as well as their roles in neoliberal governance. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
