Background: Breastfeeding has many health benefits and impacts for both mother and baby. The process of breastfeeding means giving breast milk to a child, either through direct breastfeeding at the breast, expressing breast milk (manually or by pump) through a bottle/spoon/cup without direct breastfeeding or a combination of both, but most of the research on breastfeeding so far has not considered method of giving breast milk to babies. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the relationship between breastfeeding methods, be it direct breastfeeding, exclusive pumping and a combination of both, on the duration of breastfeeding. Method: Systematic review using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review or Meta-Analysis) guidelines. Data searches used search engines from Pubmed, SAGE Journal and Proquest from 2013 to 2023. The authors used inclusion and exclusion criteria to identify studies to be reviewed. There were 12 studies that met the inclusion criteria. Results: Studies show that mothers who exclusively breastfeed are at risk of having a shorter duration of breastfeeding compared to those who breastfeed directly or a combination of both. This relationship is also influenced by several related socio-cultural factors, namely age status, education, BMI, working status, parity and also the method of delivery. Conclusion: Study findings can provide information that there is a relationship between the method of breastfeeding and the duration of breastfeeding. Socialization needs to be carried out for each of these breastfeeding methods to get the optimal duration of breastfeeding. © 2024, Muhammadiyah Palu University. All rights reserved.
