Gentrification is reshaping physical space and economic structure of the urban areas with a potential of creating conflict between individuals or communities, which may escalate to collective violence. Indonesia is a compelling case to study gentrification and collective violence due to its long history of collective violence and diverse population characteristics. This article aims to examine the effect of gentrification and collective violence using spatial econometrics approach. Using a subdistrict level dataset constructed from various sources which allows for more spatially accurate estimates, positive direct effect of gentrification on collective violence are found. Estimating demand side and supply side gentrification separately, this study also found indications of early-stage gentrification throughout the analyzed subdistricts. Additionally, results also show that the direct and spillover effect of gentrification on collective violence varies across Indonesian regional subsamples. © 2026 Applied Geography Conferences.
