Introduction Unacceptable maternal mortality is a global issue. Many countries still have a problem with the high number of maternal deaths, which shows the disparities in access to high-quality health services and the gap between rich and poor. This study examines how digital tools have supported the Bumil Risti initiative in Banyuwangi Regency, Indonesia, to engage the community actively in maternal health. Methods The study utilizes a qualitative approach, conducting face-to-face interviews with expectant mothers, vegetable vendors, and health center workers. Results The program was successfully run using WhatsApp, which enabled all stakeholders to work together, thereby permitting the vegetable traders to detect high-risk pregnancies early that could be treated promptly. Discussion The utilization of WhatsApp together with an admirable member of the community showed that they can be used to develop healthcare platforms for the patients even in an emergency within the community. Conclusion The research outcomes not only drive the discovery strategies centered on the investment in digital technologies but also encourage community engagement. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
