Social support is widely recognized as a crucial element in managing chronic diseases, particularly for patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Despite its relevance, the concept is interpreted differently across disciplines, resulting in diverse definitions and applications. This study aims to explore and clarify the concept of social support in patients with cardiovascular disease and to identify its key attributes, antecedents, and consequences. This analysis used multiple databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, EBSCOhost, and Scopus. A total of 13 definitions of social support were reviewed and analyzed. Definitions were sourced from the nursing, psychology, sociology, and digital health literature. This analysis concept was based on the method developed by Walker and Avant (2011), which involves identifying the determining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents. Key elements of social support are classified into four categories: providers, forms of support, targets, and impacts. The form of social support includes emotional, informational, practical, and affective support that is provided by social networks such as family, friends, peers, communities, or online groups, which can be channeled through direct interaction or digital platforms. The antecedents of social support include isolation, loneliness, perceived social support, chronic illness, psychological factors, cognition, motivation, social determinants of health (SDoH), and peer support. Improved hedonic, eudaimonic, psychological, social, and physical well-being, while reducing readmission rates and improving quality of life, are consequences of adequate social support. A comprehensive understanding of social support forms the basis for developing responsive and integrated interventions, particularly technology-based support groups, that enhance patient-centered care, improve health outcomes, and prevent rehospitalization in cardiovascular patients. © 2025, Malque Publishing.
