This paper argues that many claims about online game addiction are not accurate and that criteria of addiction based on studies conducted in Western countries are not true. Through an ethnographic study based on the theory of Symbolic Interaction observing 152 online players in the neighbouring cities of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) in Java Island, Indonesia, was found that the online players’ gaming behavior are locally and culturally contextualized which differentiate them from the typologies of online game players in the world. The majority of players indicated positive behaviors characterized by organized time management, interaction etiquette, and the presence of sensitivity of individuals within the community of online players. © 2005 – ongoing JATIT & LLS.
