This article reports a systematic literature review about the existing guidelines for developing high usability software development tools. Some concepts from multi-disciplines are identified to evaluate or enhance the usability of low-code software development environments. The review is conducted using the Kitchenham method, selecting 6 papers from reputable journals in HCI. This review concludes that a set of concepts from HCI and other disciplines are promising to evaluate and enhance the usability of low-code software development environments. Among them are the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ), End-user development, Educational Technology Acceptance & Satisfaction Model (ETAS-M), and some concepts from Psychology field as well. A preliminary mapping of those concepts to the life cycle of software engineering is also proposed in this report. The set of useful concepts and the suggested mapping should be further elaborated to provide low-code software tool developers with clear HCI guidelines. © 2025 IEEE.
