Recreational walking motivation factors regarding the micro built elements in the new Jakarta transit oriented development environment

Abstrak
Transit Oriented Development (TOD) areas are more than transit spaces; they are living spaces that allow for diverse activities in the urban context. Jakarta, whose TOD areas are currently being developed, aims to model their TOD areas as ideal walking spaces. However, current efforts and studies have only considered walking as a transit method rather than a leisure activity influenced by its surroundings. Therefore, using a qualitative approach, this study investigates micro-built element aspects and the environmental conditions in two developing Jakarta TOD areas and their impact on forming walking motivation. This study includes a literature review, route points mapping analysis, and interviews to unfold the potential of recreational walking and determine how the built elements' aspects are perceived. Despite being limited to developed areas, the findings show that micro-built elements, such as signages and building façades, play a significant role in forming the public's walking motivation and that each of its aspects and placement has different potential. This study produced insights for future urban public space developers regarding micro-built elements and highlighted the need for more detailed guidelines to produce better walking experiences in TOD areas as living spaces. © 2024 Author(s).
