The problem of food waste poses critical ecological as well as economic concerns. It is a contributing factor for greenhouse gas emissions and an impediment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This research examines the Indonesian context and the specific behavioral drivers that aid in the reduction of household food waste. It demonstrates the impact of knowledge and awareness of environment on the intention to avoid food waste (ITA) and how the intention translates to actionable sustainable food practices. A quantitative survey design was employed in collecting data from 150 household decision makers in the region's cities. Data was analyzed using PLS-SEM. Participants' responses confirmed that both knowledge and awareness positively affect ITA and that ITA significantly affects food-related habits. Mediation analysis demonstrated that ITA fully mediates the relation of knowledge, awareness, and habits. The findings illustrate the pressing need for food waste reduction that ignites targeted educational and awareness-based interventions environments. The research offers critical evidence to legislators and concerned parties for developing actionable interventions that curtail food waste at the household level while fostering sustainable consumption in society. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
