Using a qualitative approach through a narrative literature review, this study examines the ironic phenomenon of stunting which is still a public health problem in developed countries like England, which is an interpretation of socio-economic inequality. Although the UK's prevalence of stunting for children aged ≥ 5 years (1.48% in 2021-2022) appears lower than the Netherlands (1.6%) and Finland (1.8%), this finding is strongly suspected of masking the real problem. The lower figure is likely a reflection of less systematic detection systems, such as national measurement, which often misses the crucial first 1000 days of life for early detection. In contrast, more careful monitoring systems in other countries are able to identify more cases. The study concludes that stunting is a significant problem in the UK with a large economic impact, and the official figures have the potential to hide many undiagnosed cases. Therefore, the proposed solution is the implementation of a more robust bioanalytical surveillance system, the use of new technologies, and efforts to bridge health disparities between regions for accurate early detection. © 2025, Green Publication.
