Jakarta is the capital city and the center of government of Indonesia. The proclamation of independence was a momentum for Jakarta to establish an autonomous government under the Indonesian leadership. From the establishment of Jakarta National Government until Military Aggression I, Jakarta was under a dual government due to the arrival of the Allied forces, who established a military government based in Jakarta named Allied Military Administration. After Military Aggression I, the government of Jakarta city was completely under the Dutch’s power until the recognition of sovereignty. Under the Dutch’s control, the government of Jakarta used the name of Stadsgemeente Batavia, a name that had formerly been used in the Dutch East Indies era. The changes and the expansion of Jakarta’s territory also occured during that period. Jakarta’s dynamics at the time affected an implementation of a set of policies which triggered the public response, as Jakarta was fully under the Dutch’s control until a recognition of sovereignty. Nevertheless, at the same time, the Dutch’s repressive action provoked the spirit of nationalism among the people. In an effort to preserve the identity of Indonesia, the people of Jakarta courageously resisted the Dutch’s power. This chapter mainly focuses on the correlation between the Jakarta government from 1947 to 1950 and the public response to the policies that were adopted at that time. To know the lives of Jakarta people in the period, this chapter investigates another side of Jakarta through the condition of the local government at the time. This chapter applies historical methods consisting of heuristic, internal and external criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The heuristic stage was carried out by searching and finding sources that are in line with the research problems. The primary sources used in this chapter were obtained from the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia and the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia. The next stage, criticism, was conducted to test the validity and authenticity of the sources. The obtained data were then interpreted by linking acquired facts according to the context of the era in the discussion period. The last stage of the research is historiography, or historical writing. © 2021 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
