Abstrak
This chapter interrogates the challenges experienced by precarious online gig workers in Indonesia to mobilise a rights-based vocabulary to improve working conditions. Through the case of app-based transport drivers, this chapter shows how the internalisation of neoliberal-derived ideas of entrepreneurialism hinders these workers from seeing themselves as entitled to basic labour rights. Workers’ engagement with collectives that help them to improve their own well-being (inadvertently) helps nurture their sense of entrepreneurialism. The struggle of precarious workers in Indonesia takes place where standard employment relationships have been historically rare, and labour-state-capital relationships have been shaped by the influence of existing conservative-nationalist political traditions. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Amalinda Savirani and Ken M.P.
