Abstract
Mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) with enhanced specific surface area, tuned silica gel network, preserved hydroxyl-carbonate-apatite (HCA) and improved antibacterial performance is advantageous for advanced biomedical implants. Thus, titanium dioxide nanostructures (TiO2NSs)-incorporated MBG samples were produced via a facile evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA)-assisted sol-gel approach and characterized. The influence of changing TiO2contents (0.0–0.8 mol%) on the composition, structure, and morphology of MBG was determined. XRD analysis revealed a progressive increase in MBG crystallinity with TiO2NSs incorporation which causes improvement in the charge transport and overall. N2physisorption isotherms indicated a decrease in specific surface area from 363.5 m2 g−1to 332.3 m2 g−1with increasing TiO2NSs content. FTIR spectra of MBG demonstrated a reduction in hydroxyl ion concentration, leading to the formation of a thinner and more porous silica gel layer upon simulated body fluid (SBF) exposure. Consecutively, the incorporation of 0.6 mol% TiO2NS obtained in a more robust HCA layer, signifying improved bioactivity. The agar well diffusion assays confirmed the antibacterial efficacy against gram negative S. Aureus bacteria with the inhibition zone increasing from 11.35 mm (pristine MBG) to 19.98 mm (TiO2-modified MBG). These findings revealed TiO2-incorporated MBG as a promising material for antibacterial implant applications, offering a synergistic balance between bioactivity and antimicrobial performance. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.
